What the Chinese check looks at

  • 01

    Wrong characters

Homophones typed by mistake, such as 在接再厉 for 再接再厉 or 以经 for 已经, the errors pinyin input makes easy.

  • 02

    的, 地 and 得

地 before a verb, 得 after a verb that has a complement, 的 before a noun: three particles that sound alike in speech.

  • 03

    Measure words

一本书, 一件衣服, 一张纸: a measure word that does not fit its noun is corrected.

  • 04

    Word order and 了

Time words before the verb, 没 without a final 了, and missing or extra sentence parts.

How to check Chinese grammar

  1. 01

    Paste the Chinese text

Simplified or Traditional; the checker keeps the characters you use and never converts between them.

  2. 02

    Keep Chinese selected

Choose proofread to fix errors only, or polish to make awkward sentences read naturally too.

  3. 03

    Read the fixes

Each main fix quotes the Chinese, shows the correction and explains the rule in English.

Common Chinese mistakes, with corrections

These are among the errors the Chinese checklist covers. Each line shows the mistake, the correction and the reason:

  • 他跑的很快 → 他跑得很快 (得 links a verb to how it is done)
  • 认真的学习 → 认真地学习 (地 links a description to the verb after it)
  • 一个书 → 一本书 (books take the measure word 本)
  • 我昨天没去了 → 我昨天没去 (没 is not used with a final 了)
  • 我去北京明天 → 我明天去北京 (time words come before the verb)
  • 在接再厉 → 再接再厉 (a wrong character in a set phrase)
  • 我很好,谢谢. → 我很好,谢谢。 (Chinese text uses full-width punctuation)

Simplified, Traditional and Cantonese

The checker keeps Simplified or Traditional characters exactly as your text uses them: it corrects mistakes, it does not convert scripts. Text from Taiwan or Hong Kong written in Traditional characters is checked as standard written Chinese.

Written Cantonese uses its own characters and grammar, such as 佢 and 嘅. The checker is set up for standard written Chinese, so it may treat Cantonese forms as mistakes; we do not recommend it for Cantonese texts.

Check these yourself

Four checks you can do before you paste:

  • Before a verb use 地; after a verb with a complement use 得.
  • Say each number with its measure word: 一本, 一张, 一件.
  • Put time and place before the verb, as in 我明天在家工作。
  • Switch your keyboard to full-width punctuation for Chinese text.

Chinese grammar checker FAQ

Does it work with Traditional Chinese?

Yes. Paste Simplified or Traditional characters and the corrected text keeps the same script. The checker corrects wrong characters and grammar but never converts between Simplified and Traditional.

Are the corrections explained in English?

Yes. The corrected text stays in Chinese, and each of up to 12 main fixes quotes the Chinese, shows the correction and gives a short reason in English, such as "得 links the verb to its complement".

How is Chinese text priced?

Each Chinese character counts as one word and punctuation is not counted, so a 500-character text costs 500 credits. Every check costs at least 20 credits, and up to 3,000 characters fit in one check.

Can it check pinyin?

It is built for Chinese characters. Pinyin inside a text is kept as written; the checker is not designed to correct pinyin spelling or tone marks.

Is this Chinese grammar checker free?

Signing up and reading the mistake list on this page are free. Checks use purchased credits at 1 credit per word; new accounts start with no credits, and packs start at $4.99.

Check your Chinese before you send it

Packs start at $4.99 for 25,000 credits, about 25,000 Chinese characters. Signing up is free.
