What the German check looks at

  • 01

    Cases after prepositions

Mit, seit and nach take the dative, für and ohne the accusative: a wrong article or pronoun after them is corrected.

  • 02

    Adjective endings

Endings after der, ein or no article are matched to gender, case and number, a frequent stumbling block for learners.

  • 03

    Verb position

The verb comes second in a main clause and last after weil, dass, ob and other subordinating words, separable verbs included.

  • 04

    Commas and capitals

Commas before subordinate and relative clauses, and capital letters for nouns and for verbs used as nouns, as in beim Essen.

How to check German grammar

  1. 01

    Paste the German text

Copy it from your document, email or homework; umlauts and ß come through as they are.

  2. 02

    Keep German selected

The page starts with German. Choose proofread for errors only, or polish to smooth awkward sentences too.

  3. 03

    Learn from the list

Each main fix shows the original words, the correction and the rule in English.

Common German mistakes, with corrections

These are among the errors the German checklist covers. Each line shows the mistake, the correction and the reason:

  • Ich glaube, das er kommt → Ich glaube, dass er kommt (dass starts a clause; das is an article or pronoun)
  • Ihr seit zu spät → Ihr seid zu spät (seid is a form of sein; seit means since)
  • mit der Bus → mit dem Bus (mit always takes the dative)
  • weil ich habe keine Zeit → weil ich keine Zeit habe (the verb goes last after weil)
  • ein großer Haus → ein großes Haus (Haus is neuter, so the ending after ein is -es)
  • Ich weiß dass du recht hast → Ich weiß, dass du recht hast (a comma comes before the dass clause)
  • beim essen → beim Essen (a verb used as a noun takes a capital letter)

Swiss, Austrian and dialect German

Swiss Standard German writes ss instead of ß, and the checker keeps ss when your text uses it. Austrian vocabulary such as Jänner is standard in Austria; if the checker ever lists such a word as a fix, keep your original.

German written the way a dialect is spoken is not standard German, so the checker may treat dialect forms as mistakes. Choose proofread and review the list before you accept the changes.

Check these yourself before you submit

Four checks that catch most learner errors by hand:

  • Find the verb in every weil, dass or ob clause and make sure it comes last.
  • Read each preposition with the article after it: mit dem, für den, seit der.
  • Capitalize every noun, including nouns made from verbs and adjectives.
  • Put a comma before dass, weil, wenn and relative pronouns.

German grammar checker FAQ

Does it explain the corrections in English?

Yes. The corrected text stays in German, and each of up to 12 main fixes quotes the German words, shows the correction and gives a short reason in English, such as "mit takes the dative".

Will it change du to Sie or the other way round?

No. The checker keeps the form of address your text uses. If the text mixes du and Sie, it makes the form consistent with the one used most and lists that as a fix.

Is this German grammar checker free?

Signing up and reading the mistake list on this page are free. Checks use purchased credits: 1 credit per word, at least 20 credits, so a 200-word paragraph costs 200 credits. New accounts start with no credits.

Can I check German homework or exam texts?

You can check any German text you paste. If your school or exam rules limit the help you may use, follow them; the list of fixes is there so you can learn the rule behind each correction.
