English punctuation rules the checker applies

Most punctuation fixes in English text come down to a handful of rules:

  • Two full sentences need a full stop, a semicolon, or a comma with and, but or so between them: It was late, so we went home.
  • A comma follows an opening word or clause: However, the client asked for changes.
  • It's means it is; its is possessive: It's clear the team did its best.
  • Let's means let us: Let's meet on Friday.
  • Plurals take no apostrophe: two apples, the 1990s.
  • Days, months and languages take capitals: Friday, October, German.

Punctuation in other languages

Choose the language of your text, because each one has rules of its own:

  • German: a comma before subordinate clauses, including dass and weil clauses and relative clauses.
  • Spanish: questions and exclamations open with ¿ and ¡.
  • French: a space before ; : ! and ?, kept the way your text writes it.
  • Chinese and Japanese: full-width marks such as ,and 。, and 「」 quotation marks in Japanese.

Style choices stay yours

Some punctuation is a choice, not a rule: the serial (Oxford) comma before and in a list, straight or curly quotation marks, US or UK spelling. The checker keeps the choice your text makes and only makes it consistent where the text mixes styles.

Punctuation checker FAQ

Does it add or remove the Oxford comma?

Neither, as a rule. It keeps the choice your text already makes. If the text uses the serial comma in some lists and not in others, it makes them consistent with the style used most and lists that as a fix.

Can it fix comma splices?

Yes. When two complete sentences are joined only by a comma, it corrects the punctuation, usually with a full stop, a semicolon or a joining word such as so, and lists the fix with the rule.

Does it check punctuation in other languages?

Yes, in German, Japanese, Chinese, Spanish and French as well as English. Choose the language before checking so the right rules apply, such as German clause commas or Spanish opening marks.

Is the punctuation checker free?

The rules on this page are free to read. Checks use purchased credits at 1 credit per word, at least 20 credits per check; new accounts start with no credits, and packs start at $4.99.
